Going vegan
About 6 weeks ago I made the conscious decision to switch to a plant based diet and embrace all the criticism that comes along with a vegan lifestyle, Believe me, there's a god damn tsunami of it! Yes, Susan i understand you don't agree with it, now go eat your chicken nuggets in peace. Admittedly, before i made this change in my life i too thought veganism was silly and played my part in ridiculing it, This is how society and social media train you to think. Veganism is one of the best decisions i have ever made and here is why it's so great and far more accessible than you think.
Reservations and expectations
I had never, until very soon before becoming vegan, ever considered that i would adopt this lifestyle and diet. Despite having a very close friend of mine who has been vegan for several years and always talking about it, i kept my ears closed and thought to myself 'yeah, maybe it is cruel eating animals for meat but why cant you just be vegetarian?'. I had always thought, like most of the public, that being vegan meant you could only eat a very few select things like an iceberg lettuce and that you got very underweight, admittedly as a young woman this part of veganism wasn't all that unappealing. I also thought that being vegan meant i would have far less energy and as a result of such my university grades would suffer and honestly that situation is dire enough without sabotaging myself even further.
the process
When January rolled around this year and i made my terribly cliche resolution to lose weight i knew for a fact that i am just too lazy to actually work out enough to make a difference so i thought to myself 'why don't i just change my diet and see what difference that makes?'. With this in mind i binged on Youtube and Instagram posts and came to the conclusion that i may notice a change if i cut out dairy products which, at first i thought was impossible with my boyfriend being a dairy farmer. However, I was determined to stop moping about my body and actually start trying to make changes to myself so i began buying plant based milk and cutting out chocolate et cetera and honestly could almost immediately see a change. I will probably never consume dairy again now. Pleased with my results from this i sat working on an assignment in my friends accommodation where she put on a documentary about animals being murdered for the production of meat and felt really violently sad and sick at this. I obviously was always aware that my burgers were dead cows but i had never looked into exactly how violent the process was for all of these innocent animals and in that epiphany like moment i swore to myself i would never consume meat again. This lasted a solid three days until i found myself drunk at the 02 arena and thus in dire need of some greasy KFC to prevent the hangover. However, that was the very last time i ate any meat and that was early-mid February 2019. After this i thought to myself how little animal byproducts were left for me to consume and realized i could easily give them up. So i decided to commit to a vegan diet and join a lovely, compassionate community who make a real difference in the world.
changes I have noticed
Very early on i noticed a big change in my thighs, they had far less fat and felt so lean and strong to me and i had not worked out at all. This honestly did wonders for my faltering self-esteem and has really motivated to walk the 30 minutes it takes to get to campus rather than get the free bus. FREE!!. That's magic. I have always been one of those rude people that is annoyingly blessed with naturally decent skin but i do get the odd spot or imperfection. Since being plant based there have been far less unwelcome friends on my face and the odd times i have gotten spots i have found they are far less nasty and clear up way quicker. I also have been getting a lot more dreams, really unique ones and haven'd had any nightmares. vegan's have more fun than blondes!
Is it more effort?
Honestly the only part about veganism that I have found is that at first you have to check all of the ingredients on the back of food packaging. This becomes a lot quicker once you learn what you can and cant eat which i promise you'll pick up very quickly. In terms of cooking, I am an extremely lazy chef, I get it from my mother but even i can veganism. Things like free from pasta and pesto are great, a Linda Mcartney sausage sandwhich is a dream, falafel wraps are a big staple for me, soup, Quorn nuggets, Giant crumpets. Honestly the list is huge. I plan on doing another blog post soon on super easy vegan meals for the lazy people, the students and the people who are a combination of both so keep an eye out for that.
How i feel about continuing with veganism?
Being a vegan has made me feel so much pride knowing that if someone like me can swap to veganism then most people out there can and the very fact that i have made this decision to change my lifestyle gives me so much hope that people in close proximity to me will realize how genuinely plausible and accessible a vegan diet can be. You do not have to be loaded or a gourmet level chef to be able to sustain veganism. Even bacon rasher crisps are vegan and most restaurants out there provide multiple amazing vegan options. Now that i am so much more aware of the ongoings of the meat industry i am truly inspired by A) raise awareness of plant based alternatives and B) continue with veganism for as long as i can, I will definitely never eat meat again. People will claim to love animals and will post pictures upon pictures of themselves with dogs and rabbits etc and yet they consume chickens and cows and pigs multiple times a week with no issue. All lives matter. All animals, and humans have equal value as living beings.
As well as my diet i hope to make changes in other aspects of my life such as reducing the length of time i spend in the shower, purchasing a bamboo toothbrush, Reducing the amount of money i spend on clothes and when i do need something i will aim to purchase it from vegan friendly brands such as Koi footwear.https://www.koifootwear.com/collections/view-all-new-in?q=&hPP=60&idx=shopify_koi_live_products&p=7&is_v=1
Farewell fast fashion.
