my 2019 goals
January is well and truly here which means the annual Christmas chocolate stash has run out, the winter warmer pounds have piled on and the resolutions have been made. They say rules were made to be broken but where does that leave resolutions? If we are being honest, the word resolution wreaks of cringe and we all know it so that for reason I've decided to opt for goals. I typically do not make these and if by chance i have it will only be one or two that i forget about by time February makes her appearance. This year however, i am entering my twenties and yet i am nowhere near the super rich super pretty billionaire ballerina my five year old self was hoping for. So, in attempt to reduce self loathing and improve...well, myself, here are my goals for the year.
1) Buy less clothes
A close friend of mine has been a successful vegan for around two years now and she expands this well past her diet, doing everything she can to reduce her carbon footprint. She has stopped buying clothes unless hers are falling to pieces or she purchases from a charity shop. A very moral person i wish to be more like. Looking at her life, and my embarrassing exploding suitcase i have decided this year is the year to change. Since starting university i have spent a freakish abundance of my student loan on clothes but now the novelty of having money has worn off i would very much like to cut back. I will begin by donating any clothes i do not wear on a regular basis to charity. Our society revolves around excessive consumerism, its exhausting and frankly, i believe we all need to play our part to revert back to a state of tranquility. We do not need 25 jumpers or t shirts or what not. There are only seven days in the week. If i must buy clothes then i will be shopping on sites such as 'Wholesome culture 'https://www.wholesomeculture.com/ as 15% of their profits go to animal shelters and they are an extremely ethical company.
2) spend more time with my dog
Living away at university for the majority makes me really miss all the beautiful animals in my life. Over the last summer i began volunteering at an animal shelter to make up for lost time but I've come to realize nobody is quite as deserving of our affection as animals. My Labrador is very patient and loving so he deserves all the cuddles and pats before its too late. Plus its very therapeutic to take your dog on a nice walk or sit there cuddling them even if only for a few minutes a day. My theory is that spending more time with our pets will make us all happier.
3) Get a tattoo
This may be my Pisces showing but i am a very passionate person and i have adores tattoos for years growing up. There are a lot of things i love and i have been designing tattoos very poorly on my laptop for three years. The time has come to take the plunge. Plus it seems like such a cool way to say farewell to my teenage years. My endless Pinterest board seriously needs to turn into a reality pronto. Keep an eye out in the coming months for a blog post about tattoos because i am pretty sure i will be completing this goal.
4) Watch more Audrey Hepburn
next is a very pleasurable goal for me and it is simply to watch even more Audrey Hepburn films. She has been an idol of mine for years now and as i am starting to grow more i find myself aspiring to be more and more like her. Audrey was an extremely kind women who gave a lot of her to causes such as UNICEF and in all of her movies her kindness definitely shines through the screen. I may do a more in depth post reviewing some of my favorite films she has starred in. Each year i am sure we all look forward to transforming ourselves into the best version that we can be and i can promise you, spending a good few hours with your head in Audrey Hepburn films is the single best way i have found to accomplish being a better you.
5) Visit somewhere new
2018 was the year i got my first passport. I have never been on a flight. not a single one in nineteen years. In 2019 i would very much like to force myself to see more of the world even if that doesn't result in a romantic trip to Paris or an exciting weekend in Amsterdam. I would be more than happy simply exploring more areas of my own country. I am from a very small town filled with charity shops and opticians, i have to see more of the earth. This one i cant even explain how much i want to achieve. Just trust me.
6) Read more
I am an English literature student so i get to read a lot of designated texts and set critics and as fantastic as that is i really want to make an active effort this year to read as much as i can. More than anything i want to reader wider. Last year i took a module called 'World literature' in which we were given a map of the world and in groups we had to fill in what countries we had read books or poetry from. Naturally, we all discovered we were very ignorant readers as very few groups had any outside of the United Kingdom and the United Sates. This has actively haunted me since then. How can i be proud to call myself an English grad if 95% of my reading repertoire is westernized and canonical.
7) Last but not least, My doctors for various conditions, physical and mental have been on me for years to take up yoga. Of course i always say that i will do and i have even looked at a few yoga studios but i am ashamed to say i have never actually done so. No more messing around when it comes to health. When my next lot of student loan comes in i will treat myself to a real yoga mat and attempt to stick at it for as long as possible. This is a goal i really hope i can achieve.
